1, Chinese Zodiac:
2017 is the year of rooster, according to the Chinese Zodiac, which is based on a twelve-year cycle, each year in that cycle related to an animal sign. These signs are the rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, sheep, monkey, rooster, dog and pig. When the birth is given on the year of rooster, it is indicated his or her sign is rooster, and his or her destiny and charater is related to rooster.
Chinese New Year lasts from the Jan.1st to 15th based on lunar calendar. Actually, people usually prepare it from Dec.23rdor 24th of the last year, it is also called “off year”, (23rd for the northen and 24th for the southen). It is a “clean day”, all corner of the house, furniture or equipment will be clean up at this day, it is a tradition activity, maybe thanks to the “dust” is the homophone of “old” in Chinese, clean the “dust” means drive out bad luck and welcome new hope.
3, Spring Festival Couplets, Paper-cut for windows, New Year Picture
Spring Festival couplets are pasted on both sides the door or the wall, it is used red paper written with good-wishes poem in black or golden charaters, for health, wealth, good luck ect. It descends from the ancient time to expel the evil, the same as New Year Picture which is also pasted in the door. Paper-cut for windows is one of the Chinese traditional craft, it can be the animals, plants, people or god, not only for celebration but also a kind of decoration.
4 , New Year’s Eve
This is the most important moment for Chinese people. Generally, the big family will be reunion for dinner, the northern prefer dumplin mostly, different kinds of dishes are full of the table, the family including all old people and little baby are sitting around the table to toast and enjoy the food/drinks and happiness till the mid of the night or all night for waiting of new year’s arrival. It is called “ShouSui”. BTW, watching CCTV’s Spring Festival Gala Evening is the entertaiment during the night for most people.
5, Firecrakers/Fireworks and Red Envelop
Firecrackers must be set off in 12:00am of the new year, it is the most fun part of new year, at the moment, every family set off firecrakers or fireworks to get rid of monster, drive out evil and welcome new year. It can continue 1 or 2 hours, the whole courntry burtsts with thundering, joyful noise of firecrackers. Meanwhile, the adults or the elder gives Red Envelop which is also known as lucky money to the children, Red envelop is a sign of making children to grow up safely a whole year. I guess that’s the farest wonderful part for children to set off firecrakers and mounts of red envelops.
6, The First Day of New Year
In the first day of new year, people will visit each other with greeting “happy new year”, typically, the youger must visit the older firstly with gift, it is called “BaiNian”. It usually last for a few days to visit all friends, relatives, teachers, boss ect, specially in rural, there are big families. And interesting thing for the married people is, the couples visit the male’s parents in the first day and the female’s parents in the second day. 7, Latern Festival
The latern Festival marks the end of the festival, different shapes of laterns are displayed on the evening of Jan. 15th. People decorate the home with lanterns as well while eating Rice Dumpling (Yuanxiao or Tangyuan) which is a traditional food for the Lantern Festival. The round shape symbolizes reunion, harmony and happiness. During the night of the Lantern Festival, family members gather together to eat the delicious Rice Dumplings and appreciate the full moon.
